Degree Overview: Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Computer Information System

Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Computer Information System degree programs will train students in the maintenance, installation, analysis, and design of computer networks and systems. Typically, associate degree program graduates will be prepared for entry-level employment in specialized computer customer support, systems administration, website design, and database management.

A.A.S. in Computer Information Systems Degree Program

Students enrolled in an associate degree program in computer information systems can expect to become adept at programming languages, database management, system design and analysis, and computer architecture, in addition to developing skills in network security and administration. Web development techniques that involve the use of XML, HTML and Java are also taught in these degree programs.

Students also learn how to install local area networks (LAN) and become an expert at dissecting software problems, analyzing networks, assessing hardware and suggesting appropriate upgrades to satisfy the needs of clients. Admission criteria usually require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma. Depending on the programs, some may require students to complete prerequisite courses in mathematics.

Program Coursework

Typically, students can complete the associate degree program within two years, if they are enrolled full-time, and it generally require approximately sixty-two to sixty-three semester hours of coursework for completion. The programs usually offer hands-on experience maintaining computer software and hardware, as well as creating network solutions. Students will be expected to prepare portfolios of completed work that will be used to highlight their abilities while seeking employment. In addition to general educational requirements, course topic may include the following:

Career Options

Typically, associate degree program graduates will qualify for entry-level employment working with either software applications or networking. They will be able to seek employment opportunities in the information technology departments of various businesses or in the computer industry. Graduates may obtain the following job titles:

•Assistant systems administrator
•Web developer

Certification and Continuing Education Information

Organizations such as CompTIA offer certifications to associate degree program graduates. Certifications are available in security systems, servers, and networking. In addition, computer information systems certificate programs will help graduates stay up-to-date with changes in the industry throughout their careers or gain specialization in a related area, including e-commerce. Individuals who want to further their education should consider pursuing a four-year bachelor degree program in computer science or computer information systems.
