Majors Overview August 26, 2013

Students who have earned their associate’s degree in computer programming will be able to work behind the scenes to write programs that tell computers what to do. Candidates who are interested will be able to prepare for careers in programming by enrolling in an associate degree program via online or technical school and community colleges.

Associate Degree Program in Computer Programming

Students enrolled in computer programming associate degree programs can expect to learn technologies and languages employed in writing programs for a variety of computer functions. They will develop skills in general programming concepts as well as computer programming languages currently used. They will learn how to write new programs, computer programming updates, and repair current programs.

Different concentrations are offered within the coursework of some Associate of Computer Programming degree programs. These may include web development or Java. Schools may offer associate degree programs in computer programming in diverse formats, including Associate of Occupational Studies (A.O.S.), Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.), and Associate of Science (A.S.). Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma.

Program Coursework

Typically, computer programming associate degree program curriculum require students to spend time in computer labs receiving hands-on training, as well as completing coursework. Students will be required to solve real-life problems or create programs using knowledge and resources gained through studies. Along with coursework, students can participate in cooperative education and internships. Students will be expected to take some variation of courses such as:

•Visual basic
•Systems design and analysis
•C++ programs
•Java programming
•Ethical and copyright issues

Career Options

Between 2008 and 2018, computer programmers should expect an employment decline of 3%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). However, computer programming associate degree program graduates may find different career options in this field. Graduates can obtain the following career titles:

•Systems programmer
•Software programmer
•Programmer analyst
•Computer programmer

Information on Continuing Education

An associate’s degree may suffice in helping computer programmers find entry-level work in the field, although employers prefer candidates to hold bachelor’s degrees. Interested individuals can seek enrollment in relevant bachelor degree programs such as software engineering, computer information systems or computer science. Obtaining professional certification offered by a software or product vendor would improve a computer programmer’s employability by offering him or her a chance to demonstrate that he or she has competency that is on par with industry standards.
