Degree Overview: Associate of Computer Systems and Network Technology

Students enrolled in an associate degree program in computer systems and network technology is trained in designing, installing and configuring computer systems and networks. After students complete the associate degree program, they can seek entry-level jobs in computer systems and network technology.

Associate Degree Program in Computer System and Network Technology

Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma, in addition to submitting official transcripts of all courses completed by them. Programs are centered on network infrastructure and computer system hardware. Enrolled students are taught about networks, operating systems, computer hardware, and digital and electronic circuits. Associate degree program graduates will be prepared to sit for the Cisco Certified Network Associate, Microsoft Certified System Engineer, Microsoft Certified System Administrator, and CompTIA A+ and Network+ certification exams.

The associate degree programs usually take around two years to complete, if students are enrolled full-time. Coursework concentrates on computer software and hardware, local area networks (LANs), and operating systems. Program course topics may include the following:

Job duties might include network design, configuration, network installation, network administration, and systems security. Graduates may obtain the following job titles:

Associate degree program graduates should consider enrolling in a bachelor degree program to learn new technologies and improve their skills. Bachelor degree program in related subjects, including information resource management or computer information systems, will teach remote access, advanced routing, and wireless networking technology. Master degree programs in subjects such as information security or system and networking administration can teach security policies, software security, network security, and cryptology. Working professionals who have completed the bachelor degree program might want to pursue an online master degree program, if they are unable to take classes on campus.
