An Associate of Science in General Studies is ideal for students who plan to take a broad range of courses in an adaptable program. Graduates can be prepared for 4-year bachelor’s degree programs or entry-level careers with these A.S. in general studies programs.

A.S. in General Studies Programs

Enrollment in an Associate of Science in General Studies program can benefit students, who have not yet made up their minds about the career path they want to pursue. Students enrolled in these programs can not only earn credits in general education subjects such as natural sciences, social sciences, the humanities, composition and math, but can also use the coursework to discover their areas of interest. The program also helps them to hone their critical thinking and communication skills while imparting knowledge on the use of computer technology.

Educational Requirements

Admission criteria in an A.S. in General Studies program require the submission of transcripts of GED or high school scores. In some programs, applicants may also be required to pass placement exams in Math and English.

Coursework

Core coursework in the sciences and liberal arts are required to be completed by students enrolled in a majority of general studies associate’s degree programs. They may also complete electives of up to 29 hours in a study concentration area of interest. Coursework may include:

Continuing Education Choices

Those who successfully graduate from A.S. programs in general studies can choose to continue their education by earning a bachelor’s degree in the field. Depending on the study areas of concentration chosen, they can complete coursework in engineering, liberal arts, heath care, math and science. Some programs allow students to transfer credits to a four-year university or college with which the schools offering the associate degree may have prior agreements to this effect.
