Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) Degree Programs in Media Production

Students enrolled in a B.F.A. in Media Production program are provided with foundational skills in storytelling, producing, lighting, shooting, and filming digital video. Coursework is devised to introduce students to various animation techniques and post-production software.

Schools may ask students to specialize in an area of interest and encourage them to develop a personal style in their individual work, which can be established fully in a capstone or portfolio project. Over the duration of a media production program, students can increase their grasp of media criticism and the media industry. Many B.F.A. programs also allow students to participate in study abroad courses and internships.

Educational Requirements

Incoming students to many B.F.A. in Media Production programs are required to already be students in a media program at the school. They require students to have created a media portfolio while completing lower-division coursework in the media program in order to qualify for admission to an upper-division B.F.A. program. Students may also be expected to hold a minimum grade point average (GPA) and to have completed prerequisite coursework.

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, job growth rate of three percent have been predicted for camera operators for television, movies, and videos (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Over the same decade, directors and producers are expected to witness a three percent growth. In May 2012, camera operators brought in an average annual wage of $49,010 (BLS). During that year, directors and producers grossed about $71,350.
