Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Information Technology: Database Management

Majors Overview February 12, 2015

Graduates of Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree programs in Database Administration or Management will be provided with the tools needed to analyze and create database structures for information storage, retrieval, and organization. Database administrators will be taught how to modify databases, implement security measures, and test programs.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Information Technology: Database Management

Few schools, if any, offer Bachelor of Science (B.S.) programs in Database Management; B.S. degree programs in Information Technology with concentrations in database management are more commonly offered. Students are taught about creating databases and working with existing database structures in the organization, storage, and retrieval of information. Coursework is devised to train students by honing logic and problem solving skills, aimed at linking data elements and database structures.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

Coursework

Concepts in computer programming and statistics are explored by students, in addition to database design and Web applications. Coursework may include participation in an internship and may explore topic areas such as:

•Wireless communication
•Web design
•Data modeling
•Computer architecture
•Systems analysis and design

Career Choices

Graduates can expect to become adept at installing new products, managing data systems, coordinating database development, and writing code for consulting, private sector, or government organizations. In the performance of professional duties, they would have to set user permissions aimed to allow data access given that the primary concern is data security. Graduates can choose from job titles such as:

•Database developers
•Database administrators
•Database analysts

Job and Wage Outlook

A faster-than-average job growth rate of 15% has been predicted for database administrators over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, most database administrators earned an annual wage of $77,080, ranging between a minimum of $42,930 and a maximum of $118,720 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Continuing Education Choices

While a graduate degree may help workers gain employment, employers prefer experience and on-the-job training. Bachelor’s program graduates can seek continuing education with certification or academic courses in order to keep abreast with the technological advances in the field.

Database administrators are expected to hold certified credentials that can help showcase their knowledge and skills in computer programs or languages. Institute for the Certification of Computing Professionals offers the Certified Data Management Professional, an international certification; students can qualify for the credential by earning a bachelor’s degree, gaining work experience, and passing a series of examinations. Students can also enroll in an information technology master’s degree program.
