Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Web Design

Majors Overview September 5, 2014

Students in bachelor’s degree programs in web design will be trained to complete several professional tasks, including designing web pages, producing multimedia projects, and structuring websites. These programs may be offered alone or as a specialized option within an extensive curriculum, such as communication design or graphic design.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Web Design

Students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs in web design receive training in a broad range of computing principles, design concepts, protocols, and software tools. They can expect to become experts in areas such as AdWords, analytics, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Students are taught about methods to prepare preliminary designs through computer-aided illustrations, effective communication of design ideas to employers and clients, and conduct research on target audiences’ visual preferences.

They are also free to participate in design internships with newspapers, magazines, museums, in-house art departments, and advertising agencies. Apart from hands-on and classroom instruction in design fundamentals, there is an emphasis on the legal aspects of web design, such as ethical standards, intellectual property, and copyright.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma. Successful completion of high school art coursework and computer literacy may be required by incoming students to some programs.

Some schools require a separate application from incoming students to the art and design school; preparation of a portfolio of original artwork and its submission for review would be required before these students are admitted to the program. Introductory undergraduate art courses would benefit incoming students without any prior design or art experience.

Coursework

Coursework covers both web-based and print-based design and may include the following topic areas:

•Digital art
•Graphics
•Object-oriented programming
•Ad layout
•HTML and CSS
•Typography
•Website construction
•Drawing
•2-D design

Career Choices

Those who have graduated from the program can seek various positions in industries and sectors such as marketing, digital media, corporate communications, and advertising. They may seek positions such as:

•Graphic designer
•Web developer
•Webmaster
•Multimedia developer

Job and Wage Outlook

A 13% job growth rate has been predicted for graphic designers, while a 22% growth rate is expected for web developers, information security analysts, and computer network architects over the 2010 – 2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, graphic designers took home an average annual wage of $44,150, while web developers banked $62,500 that year (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Given the rapid changes in design technology, graduates of the bachelor’s degree program may seek continued education to stay abreast of the advances in the field; to this end, they may seek enrollment to appropriate courses or invest in training software. Candidates may also pursue a master’s degree program in web design or development to improve their chances of holding leadership or senior development roles.
