Degree Overview: Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Web Design

Students enrolled in an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Web Design degree program are trained to be able to seek entry-level jobs in the digital arts field. They can seek employment in various settings, including corporate marketing departments, production studios and publishing houses.

Associate Degree Program in Web Design

Coursework in a two-year associate’s degree program in web design focuses on the basics of digital art. Basic techniques in graphic design are imparted to students enrolled in this program; these include graphic identity, digital typography and 2-dimensional modeling. Students also receive an introduction to the staple programming languages and software of the graphic industry including Adobe Dreamweaver, XHTML and Adobe JavaScript. Along with graphic design, web development or web technologies programs, web design may also be taught.

In addition to completing coursework on web design, students may also have to participate in internship programs in web development conducted through professional environments, and they may be expected to put together portfolios showcasing the design projects they have been involved with. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma and submit satisfactory ACT or SAT exam scores. Students who have not taken the ACT or SAT examinations or have low scores on certain sections; they will be required to take the placement test.

Students will be required to take specific core design and technical courses, as well as general educational courses. The program course topics may include the following:

•Website design

Career Options

While some jobs call for the design and programming skills to executive effective websites, those responsibilities are usually split up. Graduates who have earned their Associate of Applied Science in Web Design degree usually go on to pursue various entry-level positions concentrated on the appearance and design of a website, including:

•Assistant designer
•Layout artist
•Assistant art director
•Production artist

Associate degree program graduates who want advanced web design positions and move into management will be required to attain a bachelor’s degree in web design or related field. These candidates will find it helpful to ensure the four-year bachelor degree program of their choice is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
