Degree Overview: Graduate Degree Program in Management Information Systems (MIS)

Majors Overview May 11, 2015

Students enrolled in the Management Information Systems (M.I.S.) graduate degree program are trained to seek a career in research or academia at the college level or in systems management in various organizations. Get information about graduate degree programs in Management Information Systems (M.I.S.) and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, and job and wage outlook.

Information on Management Information Systems Graduate Degree Program

In the course of their duties, M.I.S. professionals analyze, manage, and organize information for numerous organizations, including businesses. With a master’s degree, graduates can seek occupations as systems analysts. Systems analysts install software, troubleshoot storage problems, identify security issues, and perform other tasks aimed at optimizing the information networks of the company.

Students enrolled in some courses are taught to comprehend the business functions they are required to support while performing their work in the field of information systems management. Some schools may expect graduates to complete a thesis and a capstone project. Students enrolled in most master’s programs are required to complete about 36 credit hours of study, and some schools offer the programs in online formats.

Students enrolled in a doctoral program can hone their teaching and research skills through the creation of a customized program of study aimed at helping them achieve their career objectives.

Students research various areas, including enterprise application infrastructure and data structures. Schools may require graduates to complete a final research project and/or a dissertation or thesis. Students enrolled in most doctoral programs need about five to six years of full-time study to complete the program.

Master of Science (M.S.) in Management Information Systems (M.I.S.)

All organizations, regardless of whether they are media outlets or educational institutions, manage their information using the system. The program focuses on the way information systems assist businesses and people in accomplishing their long- and short-term goals. These complex data systems are created, changed, and implemented by information systems professionals.

Apart from information systems courses, computer science and business concepts are also learned by students enrolled in the M.S. program. After developing an understanding of basic computer software and hardware, they learn about designing, implementing, and analyzing information systems in an effort to make them more user-friendly, secure, and efficient.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited school. Students seeking admittance to some programs are required to have completed some undergraduate classes, such as:

•Business law
•Algebra or higher level math
•Management or operations management
•Accounting
•Economics

Coursework

Through completion of the core courses of the M.S. program, students can gain the foundation necessary for analyzing systems, understanding relevant methodologies, and implementing the learned skills in a real-world environment. Core coursework includes topic areas such as:

•Organizing information
•Computer science
•Telecommunications
•Policies in business
•Managing systems and data
•Designing and analyzing systems

Career Choices

Armed with a degree, students can use it in various industries, from law to accounting to government. They can choose from popular career options such as:

•Network administrator
•Computer support specialist or trainer
•Information systems consultant
•Information systems auditor
•Project manager
•Information systems designer or analyst
•Business analyst
•Information analyst or programmer

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Management Information Systems (M.I.S.)

Students who seek careers in academia or research would benefit from enrolling in a Ph.D. program in Management Information Systems. With a doctorate in the field, graduates can pursue leadership positions in consulting, project management, or information systems.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a master’s degree in information systems or a related field. This requirement is, however, waived by some schools if the applicant possesses adequate work experience in M.I.S. These incoming students may be required to complete some additional master’s level coursework.

Coursework

Doctoral program students seeking to pursue advanced research topics in the field may first develop a strong foundation in statistical and quantitative techniques. Apart from practical applications, the foundations and theories of the discipline are delved into by M.I.S.-related courses. Core coursework may include topic areas such as the following:

•Database management and design
•Business systems design and analysis
•Enterprise application infrastructure
•Operating systems and data structures

Job and Wage Outlook

In May 2012, systems analysts brought in an average annual wage of $79,680 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth of 25% has been predicted for these professionals (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
