Information on Master’s Degree Programs in Java Programming

Majors Overview July 15, 2015

This article talks about master’s degree programs in Java programming and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Information on Java Programming Programs

Few schools, if any, offer degree programs specifically in Java programming. Bachelor’s level programs are available through most universities and colleges. Bachelor’s degree programs with Java-related coursework are mainly in areas such as information science and technology or computer science.

The primary focus of master’s degree programs is on programming, software design, and engineering. The program prepares aspiring information systems managers, software engineers, software technicians and database administrators to seek careers in the field. With sufficient work experience under the belt, program graduates may enhance career prospects by seeking voluntary certifications in one or more areas.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Programs in Information Technology (IT)

Information technologists are adept at researching, designing, coordinating and managing computer-related functions for businesses. They involve themselves in managing all technical features of the business, including network security, Internet operations, and software development. The use of programming languages is often a requirement in these activities, including Java, a most commonly used language. Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a high school diploma or GED.

Coursework

Program coursework covers numerous computer courses, including both elective and required classes related specifically to Java programming. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Distributed systems
•Java programming
•Object oriented programming and design
•Programming basics
•Abstraction and data structures
•JavaScript
•Developing Web databases

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth of 15% has been predicted for computer and information systems managers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In 2012, these professionals brought in an average annual wage of $120,950 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Certification or licensure is not mandatory for information technologists, but these professionals would want to keep abreast of changes in computer technology and may study professional journals and seek voluntary certifications from Microsoft and CompTIA.

Numerous specialized IT certifications, including server administrator, entry level technician, and business intelligence developer certificates, are offered by either. Courses aiding in the certification process are available through both companies.

Master of Science (M.S.) Programs in Software Engineering

Software engineers are adept at developing software systems, and overseeing teams of programmers; they often involve themselves in scheduling and budgeting. Accordingly, coursework in this graduate degree program includes both practical and theoretical components. Students enrolled in many programs get the opportunity to work alongside businesses to gain hands-on experience.

Education Requirements

Apart from general graduate admission requirements relating to a school, many master’s degree programs in software engineering don’t have any admission prerequisites. In some programs, incoming students are required to have completed at least a year of college-level calculus, apart from a year’s experience in developing or maintaining software.

Coursework

Despite the fact that Java is a leading programming language, Java-related courses are only required in very few master’s programs. The students are presumed to complete those classes during their undergraduate education. In master’s programs, courses are offered as electives. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Web applications
•Distributed Java Applications
•Object-oriented programming
•Data structures
•Advanced Java Programming

Career Choices

Program graduates can pursue various career opportunities including:

•Manager of Software Testing
•Software Technician
•Database administrator
•Computer systems software engineer
•Software designer

Continuing Education Choices

Certification is not mandatory for professionals in software engineering. Program graduates can volunteer for the Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) and the Certified Software Development Associate (CSDA) offered by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). The Certified Software Development Associate (CSDA) is for individuals more advanced in the field; the Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) is intended to serve the needs of entry-level professionals. Continuing education for re-certification is available through the IEEE, in addition to general training courses.
