Majors Overview March 24, 2014

Students will be taught the skills needed for a leadership position in the business world with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program in Management. For those looking into a management career, a bachelor’s degree is highly recommended because many companies require it.

B.S. Programs in Management

Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Management program are taught about marketing, accounting and information or human resources management. Schools may offer these programs in online formats to allow students to work simultaneously even as they attend school. In an online course, students can employ videoconferencing, e-mail and online discussion boards, for communication with professors, and other students. An individual with an associate’s degree can expect to complete a bachelor’s degree programs within 18 months, while one with a GED or high school diploma may need four years to complete the program.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold at least a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework is devised to teach students about problem solving, business oriented research and decision-making. They are imparted knowledge of employee relations, data analysis and contract development. Coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Marketing
•Information management
•Logistics management
•Financial management
•Accounting
•Business law
•Business communication
•Economics

Career Choices

Once they complete a BS in Management, graduates can seek entry-level occupations in numerous fields including sales management, employee training, international business management, and media planning. They may choose from career options such as:

•Purchasing manager
•Operations manager
•Human resources manager

Job and Wage Outlook

A job growth rate of 7% has been predicted for purchasing managers and related occupations over the 2010-2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)); during the same period, top executives such as operations managers are expected to enjoy a job growth rate of 5%, while human resources managers should experience growth of 13%. In 2012, purchasing managers earned an average annual wage of $106,200 (BLS), while operations managers earned $114,850, and human resources managers took home $99,720.

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Management program may choose to join the workforce or opt for continued education by earning a master’s degree, such as a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) with a Management concentration. Residency programs may be included within MBA programs, wherein students are given work experience of up to six months in management positions. A student may need 1-2 years to complete these programs and is given many options such as online study, evening classes or full-time study.

The Project Management Institute (PMI) and other similar organizations offer various professional certifications for management professionals. Individuals seeking entry-level careers in the management field would benefit from the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM); certification has to be re-validated every five years through passage of an examination.
