Majors Overview January 3, 2016

This article talks about Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree programs in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, and continuing education and certification choices.

Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) Programs in Industrial and Organizational Psychology

Through the application of industrial and organizational psychology, employers can maximize their employees’ productivity and well-being in the workplace. Schools offer joint programs awarding a Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Organizational Psychology, aimed at approaching the optimization of workplace productivity from various perspectives. An interdisciplinary core curriculum is completed by students, covering topic areas in organizational behavior, business, economics, and marketing. Students learn about the psychological theories that underscore employee satisfaction. Practical human resource management skills are also in the program. Programs may also include an internship. Students take about two years of full-time study to complete these programs.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria related to joint degree programs include specific admissions requirements for each program. MBA admission criteria typically require the submission of letters of reference and a resume highlighting post-college work experience. Admission criteria in Organizational Psychology MA programs require applicants to have completed undergraduate classes in statistics and research design and to have gained familiarity with a variety of schools of psychological thought.

Coursework

Program coursework usually includes a core of MBA courses in accounting, finance, and marketing, in addition to classes covering the statistical analyses and research methodology employed in organizational psychology. Core coursework may cover subject areas such as:

•Research design
•Psychology Statistics
•Financial management
•Business communication
•Strategic human resources
•Business Statistics
•Personnel management psychology

Career Choices

Program graduates can choose from numerous positions in various settings. They often seek roles that involve the management of employees, ownership of businesses, acting as consultants, or working for the government. They may choose from possible job options such as:

•Employee motivation researcher
•Human resources manager
•Organizational Advisor

Continuing Education and Certification Choices

Organizational psychologists are not usually required to obtain licensure, as they are not usually required to work directly with patients. Passage of a written test and completion of an internship are requirements for providers of counseling services. Some graduates pursue continuing education by going on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Organizational Psychology. Research and theoretical aspects of the field are in these programs.
