Overview of Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree in Accounting

In an associate degree program in accounting, students will earn an Associate in Applied Science degree upon completion of the program and receive occupational training in spreadsheet data processing, tax preparation, and bookkeeping during the program. Students will gain knowledge in computer programs, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Access. Typically, graduates will qualify for entry-level accounting jobs.

Associate in Applied Science in Accounting

While studying the fundamental principles of accounting, students in the accounting associate degree program will acquire problem-solving, technical, and analytical skills. Students will learn about financial statement preparation, accounts payable, and payroll. They will learn how to prepare taxes for both businesses and individuals. Through the associate degree program, students will become knowledgeable in computer programs such as QuickBooks and Peachtree.

The degree program will teach students how to enter accounting data into professional balance books and financial ledgers. Individuals who are enrolled in the associate degree program in accounting will be equipped with general skills needed in business management and communication that will allow them to work efficiently in a business environment. Students will be able to participate in field trips or internship programs in some degree programs. Generally, prior to admission, students are required to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma.

Program Coursework

Typically, accounting associate degree program require around sixty credit hours of coursework that can be completed within two years, if individuals are enrolled in the program full-time. Depending on the programs, some may offer coursework in general business topics or offer electives in specialized accounting and business subjects, such as real estate, agricultural business, or financial planning. The following are course topics that may be included in the program:

•Tax law
•Microeconomic principles

Career Options

Students who have graduated from the associate degree program will qualify for entry-level employment with banks, government agencies, tax preparation companies, accounting firms, or in the finance departments of various businesses. Individuals may obtain the following job titles:

•Payroll technician
•Bank officer
•Accounting clerk
•Bookkeeper
