Overview of Associate of Arts (AA) Degree in Business Management

In this article, students will receive information on Associate in Arts degree programs in business administration; they will learn about continuing education opportunities, career options, and program coursework to make an informed decision about their education.

AA Degree in Business Management

An Associate in Arts degree in Business Management will provide students with the necessary skills needed to supervise others and manage day-to-day operations, resources, and supplies within a non-profit organization or business. Graduates may use their degree to obtain a position in production, inventory, sales, or office management, or they may select to further their studies in the business management field. The associate degree program in business management will provide students with foundations in topics such as marketing, leadership, communication skills, analysis and critical thinking, and accounting. In order for students to enroll in an associate degree program, they are required to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma.

Program Course Topics

Students are required to pass courses in the areas of social sciences, humanities, and business to earn an associate degree in business management. Though course names may vary, courses that are usually required may include some variation of the following topics:

Salary Information and Employment Outlook

An associate degree in business management will be an asset to graduates who are re-entering or entering the workforce since it allow individuals to secure positions in various industries, including service, manufacturing, or retail. Students who have graduated from the associate degree program may obtain entry-level positions such as office manager, administrative support supervisor, or office assistant, as well as becoming business entrepreneurs at their own company.

Salaries for business and office managers, administrative support supervisors will vary depending on the level of experience, job responsibilities, and place of employment. In 2010, the average annual salary for first-line supervisors of administrative and office support workers was $47,460, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS – www.bls.gov). Between 2008 and 2018, these management positions are expected to have steep competition, although job openings are expected to increase at the same rate as other occupations.

Continuing Education

Students who do not want to enter the workforce may further their education after completing an associate degree program by transferring their credits to a bachelor degree program in business management. Most accredited colleges and universities offer these bachelor degree programs. Depending on the program, students will be able to complete an internship to gain additional hands-on training.
