University of Maryland College Park Bachelor Degree Program in Hearing and Speech Sciences

University & College Info May 29, 2013

Human communication is both an art and a science. Everything we know about language, which we often take for granted, is rooted in linguistics, psychology and education. As we consider different needs of the population, we are forced to confront biological sciences, medicine, and other factors as we continue to explore disorders of communication. The University of Maryland at College Park has a bachelor degree program in hearing and speech sciences, which mainly covers the marvels of science and therapy that help people overcome disability, disorders and other issues related to speech.

The Curriculum in Hearing and Speech Program

This career is quite lucrative and socially valuable, as students can go onto become speech-language pathologists or educators. The training you receive will prepare you for national certification requirements, as well as state licensing. The curriculum features vital subjects of linguistic theory and practice, psycholinguistics, speech mechanism, child’s development and phonetic science.

Elective subjects go into further detail and include experiential learning, disorders in children, fluency disorders, aphasia, organic speech disorders and various methods of rehabilitation. Sign language and deafness subjects are also offered, as is psychology, which will prove useful in learning to deal with subjects and students. Undergraduates will successfully complete the program with a 2.0 GPA or a C- average. Students who major in speech science will complete 33 semester hours.

Academic Programs at UMCP

One of the best features about the UMCP School is the academic programs that students can sign up for. Two facilities of experimentation and learning are The Hearing and Speech Clinic as well as the Language Learning Early Advantage Program. There is also an advising program that allows students to learn one on one with experienced leaders from the college. Work experience is important in starting a career, and this is made possible through the Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research as well as the Emerging Behavioral and Social Science Scholars Program. Volunteer as a research assist and gain work experience while also fulfilling your semester quota.

The Honors Program offers opportunities to students who need financial aid, and rewards for those who excel. Students don’t have to sign up, as they are automatically enrolled when they join the program. These programs encompass scholarships, housing, priority registration and a variety of extracurricular activities.

When it comes to student associations, joining top memberships like the University of Maryland’s Chapter of the National Student Speech-Language and Hearing Association can be advantageous, as can the Student Academy of Audiology. There are fundraising events, visiting speakers and community service functions. You can get started making a difference in the lives of people while going to school!

This program will help ambitious and energetic students reach their full potential. Thanks to the UMCP School’s state-of-the-art learning facilities and interactive programs, this is one of the best options to advance in the career of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.
