University & College Info June 27, 2013

If you love art, then you must take decisive steps to establish yourself as a professional artist and not just a dreamer or a hobbyist. The University of Maryland at College Park offers a bachelor degree program in studio art, one of the most promising and thrilling of career paths in the country. This Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) program covers all areas of studio art, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, video, digital media, graphic design and photography. These are all facets of art that you can excel in, though you will also learn the fundamentals of art theory.

The UMCP Curriculum for Studio Art

This education program focuses training on the studio or gallery, which does have some fairly broad expectations when it comes to commercially saleable art. Students will learn both two and three-dimensional applications, and will be encouraged to experiment in order to find their own individual artistic voice. Before the individual voice can be mastered, an understanding of contemporary art practices and technical aspects of creative design must be established.

The Department of Art offers a program with three different tracks, culminating in an arts degree. The first track is an open major and does not require a portfolio to get started. However, it gives students plenty of opportunity to pursue electives. Specialization subjects and graphic design make up the next two tracks, which do require portfolios for admission. Tracks two and three give the student a B.A. in Advanced Specialization in Digital Media, and a B.A. in Graphic Design, respectively.

These competitive programs take a limited number of students per year. The expected GPA is 2.0 or C-. Subjects will center on the basics of art and drawing, including 2-D design, art theory and 3-D design. After the fundamentals, digital art and design are covered, including some subjects such as advanced drawing, digital processes and advanced painting studio. Other elective subjects include experiential learning, motion design, advanced interactive design, and directed studies in graphic design.

Benefits of Admission at UMCP

Students are encouraged to get involved with the arts through interactive programs and cutting edge facilities. The Department of Art welcomes professional artist speakers as well as Art Honors programs for upper-level undergraduates. This program allows students to gain experience working in private studios and create their own work for such exhibits as the Honors Seminar and the Honors Thesis Exhibition. There are fellowships available for creative and performing arts, including the John Dorsey Prize for Outstanding Curatorial Practice.

The Painting Area in the Department of Art at UMCP offers 1,250 square foot spaces with 20-foot ceilings and large skylights, ideal for inspiration. All aspects of art will be explored and encouraged, from representational to abstract to criticism. If you ever wanted to be something more than just a starving artist, then it is time to professionalize your craft and make it into a promising career? The UMCP bachelor degree program in studio art is what you need to get started—getting your proverbial foot in the door for this exciting career.
