The Best Graduate Schools Offering Software Engineering Programs
Higher Education Articles September 13, 2015This article talks about the best graduate schools offering software engineering programs and information about those schools.
Overview of Schools Offering Graduate Programs in Software Engineering
Two of the top schools that offer graduate degree programs in software engineering in the United States are Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Texas at Austin. Both the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the U.S. News & World Report have accorded high rankings to these schools for the software engineering programs offered by them. The schools offer programs aimed at both individuals who hold only formal education and at those who have substantial work experience in the field. The schools also offer flexible options, including part-time, full-time and online tracks. In this article, we take a look at some top software engineering graduate schools in the United States.
Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA
In June 2007, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) was ranked second among the best graduate schools for software engineering by Communications of the ACM. The private research university offers its Master of Software Engineering (M.S.E.) program, aimed at training leaders in the industry and invites applicants who have prior work experience of 2-5 years. Individuals who don’t satisfy work experience requirements may opt for admission to the master’s degree program in information technology with a concentration in software engineering. The school offers both programs in part-time, distance learning, and full-time formats. Students can also choose to enroll in a dual degree program leading to a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) and an MSE, or an embedded software engineering master’s degree program.
The University of Texas at Austin
In 2009, the Center for Measuring University Performance ranked the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin) (a public university) among the best research universities in the nation. In 2010, UT-Austin was ranked ninth among the best schools for graduate-level education in engineering by the U.S. News & World Report. In June 2007, Communications of the ACM accorded the university the ninth rank among the top U.S. graduate programs in software engineering.
Software engineering is offered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UT’s Cockrell School of Engineering as one of the eleven concentrations. The school – through the Center for Lifelong Engineering Education – also offers the program in a part-time format to benefit working professionals.
