Interior designers strategize in designing inner places and areas of different structures, such as workplaces, shopping centers, residential dwellings, lodging houses, food establishments, educational facilities, auditoriums, and airport stations.
Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree
The Associate of Arts in Interior design, Associate of Arts in Interior Architectural Design and Associate of Arts in Interior Studies are among the degree programs in interior design that schools typically offer. Through these programs, enrolled students will have a basic understanding of interior design that can be used to pursue a bachelor degree program. Students will gain experience in design practices and procedures, as well as learn computer-aided visual illustrations.
Program Course Topics
Students will gain an understanding in logical, inventive, and critical thinking through the degree programs. They also learn how to utilize design procedures, troubleshoot design issues, and create design provisions, plans, and agreements. Studies in preservation, textures and surfaces requirements, computer-aided drafting, and communication are also examined. Other studies may include:

Salary Information and Employment Outlook
Graduates from associate degree programs in interior design will be prepared to enter a career as a residential or commercial interior designer, lighting designer, set designer, and furniture designer. Individuals may work as a decorative finished designer at a retail store.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS – www.bls.gov), during 2008, the United States employed nearly 71,700 interior designers. Between 2008 and 2018, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects an increase of nineteen percent in interior design jobs. According to the BLS, in May 2009, interior designers are expected to earn an average annual salary of $51,990.
Continuing Education Information and Professional Licensing
Interior designers are required to be licensed in most states; individuals who want to obtain licensure will need to apply to the National Council for Interior Design Qualification. Candidates are required to have a minimum of six years of education and work experience, as well as passing the examination. The designations of certified, registered, or licensed interior designer are offered. Individuals who want to maintain their credentials are required to continue education.
