Degree Overview: Associate of Arts (A.A.) in Computer Networking

A.A. in Computer Networking Degree Program

Schools offer degree programs in computer networking under various titles such as Associate of Science (A.S.), Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.), Associate of Technical Arts, and Associate of Arts (A.A.). Students enrolled in the programs can expect to become adept at installing, managing and solving problems related to specific software, in addition to installing security programs, configuring hardware, identifying protocol functions, configuring sub interfaces and restoring data. Computer science and computer technology degree programs also commonly offer networking as an option.

Programs devised to augment knowledge through exercises in classrooms and internships. Eventually, enrolled students will become well-versed in troubleshooting networking problems, installing and maintaining wide area networks, installing networks and maintaining database management systems. Typically, admission criteria require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma.

Program Coursework

Typically, basic educational courses are required, along with networking courses. Students will be introduced to fundamentals of networking systems in courses that cover topics such as:

Career Options

Computer networking associate degree program graduates will be prepared for entry-level positions where basic skills, such as installation and troubleshooting can be utilized in the successful operation of a computer network. With certification, as well as some work experience, students who have earned their associate’s degree can also move into management positions in the field. Graduates may obtain the following career titles:

•Network administrators
•Help desk technicians
•PC support specialists
•Server administrators

Information on Continuing Education

Once students have successfully completed the associate degree program, they can seek bachelor or master degree programs in information technology, computer science, and computer networking, among other related specialization areas. In addition, this degree program will prepare students for certifications in networking offered by professional organizations and product vendors, including Cisco, Net+ and A+, among others.
