Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Web Design and Development

Those interested in becoming webmasters should look into degree programs in Web design and development. Coursework focuses on the administration and development of interactive content for mobile devices and computers. Students will explore subjects such as animation, database administration, networking, and programming languages.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Web Design and Development

Students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs in Web design and development are taught how to maintain and update websites, in addition to overseeing site content, availability, and loading speed. Coursework related to Web development is devised to teach students about managing Web servers, while the focus of Web design courses is on the features and layout of websites. Students enrolled in some programs are allowed to choose concentrations, such as back-end development or interface design.

Students can choose from hybrid, on-campus, or online programs. For-profit schools offer many of these programs that students generally take four years to complete, which may include a senior capstone project. Students enrolled in some programs are required to complete an internship.

Education Requirements

Incoming students are required to possess knowledge about basic computer usage as well as some additional knowledge. They would also benefit from completing additional coursework in mathematics, such as basic math, geometry, and trigonometry.

Admission criteria in most schools requires the submission of scores from college entrance examinations, such as the ACT or SAT; math and critical reading scores from these exams are taken into consideration by some schools.

Certification and Continuing Education Choices

Webmasters may opt for continued education to boost their employment opportunities by earning a master’s degree in a related field, such as Web development. Three levels of certification are offered by the World Organization of Webmasters (WOW); they are devised to suit the needs of all webmasters whether apprentice or professional. By volunteering for certification, these professionals can aim for better jobs and wage packets.
