Program Summary: Associate Degree Program in Web Development

Aspiring web developers should consider enrolling in an associate’s degree program in web design and development that several community colleges across the nation offer. Students are taught about designing and maintaining websites, creating animated graphics and managing the functionality of websites. The International Webmasters Association (www.iwanet.org) offers professional certification to graduates.

Associate of Science (A.S.) in Web Development and Design

Coursework includes topic areas such as navigation, web page layout, graphic design, and project management, among others. Web fundamentals such as HTML, hyperlinks, color, and images are used to teach students how to design websites. Students can expect to become adept at developing databases, managing servers, creating animated images and utilizing Web-authoring tools while creating and maintaining websites. Focus areas also include networking, motion graphics, Visual Basic programming, and E-commerce. Admission criteria usually require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma.

Certification and Continuing Education Information

Various opportunities for continuing education including employment resources and professional development courses are offered to its members by the International Webmasters Association (IWA). Members who have completed elective, core and foundation courses will qualify for certification through the IWA in various areas including web business, web graphics and multimedia, web programming, and web technologies.

Professional certification may also be sought by graduates through the Certified Internet Web Professional (CIW) in various areas including Perl Specialist, Database Design, JavaScript, E-Commerce, and Web Design Professional and Web Design.
