Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Website Development and Management

Majors Overview September 5, 2014

Bachelor’s degree programs in website development and management are not usually offered, but those still interested can look into programs in Web design, website development, and website management. Students will be taught how to create user-friendly applications that will catch the attention of others. Those that graduate may manage and create websites for government agencies, non-profit organizations, and other companies.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Website Development and Management

Students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs are provided with training in the creation, operation, and monitoring of sites for individuals and organizations. Students can expect to become adept at using computer coding, creating interactive website features, and modifying applications. They are trained to address business needs, implement Internet marketing strategies, and monitor site activity. Students engage in the designing of Web pages, embedding of images, and activation of e-business features.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma. Incoming students to some bachelor’s degree programs (devised as continuing education programs) are required to hold an associate degree.

Coursework

While coursework within the majority of programs focuses on topic areas related to business, technology, and design, some programs cover management classes as well. Apart from courses, students may have to complete an internship and a capstone project in Web development. Core coursework may include classes in computer programming, digital imaging, and Web graphics and animation, in addition to the following subject areas:

•Digital media applications
•Internet marketing
•Web authoring
•Web design and implementation
•Web design integration

Career Choices

Those that successfully complete the program arm themselves with a broader skill set, which allows them to seek entry-level careers related to website management, ecommerce development, or design. They may aspire for possible job titles such as:

•Website designer
•Website applications specialist
•Web administrator

Job and Wage Outlook

A 22% job growth rate has been predicted for Web developers and related computer occupations over the 2010 – 2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, these professionals took home an average annual wage of $62,500 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

While a bachelor’s degree is sufficient for most entry-level occupations in this field, those aspiring for upper-management or administrative positions would benefit by earning a master’s degree. While a master’s degree does not necessarily have to be in a technology-oriented area, many technology professionals pursue master’s degree programs in business.

Professional certification would help website developers and designers to showcase their skills and knowledge of specific computer languages or software programs to potential employers. Passage of a written exam or practical skill test would be needed to obtain most technology certification credentials.

Candidates can usually maintain certification by completing continuing education units or retaking exams periodically. Continuing education can also help professionals stay abreast of product changes, including software updates.
