Majors Overview June 12, 2015

This article talks about Master of Information Systems Management (M.I.S.M.) degree programs and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Master of Information Systems Management Programs

Students enrolled in master’s programs in information systems management are prepared for the evaluation and management of businesses’ information technology needs. Coursework is a blend of technology and business courses to teach graduates about the best use of technology in supporting business goals.

The length of programs can range between one and three years, and specialized concentrations are available at some schools, including data analytics, business intelligence or global information systems. Specific experience and academic requirements may need to be met by applicants. Many schools offer the program in online formats to facilitate students with location or time constraints.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree in a related major, in addition to meeting a grade-point average standard, completing prerequisite coursework and submitting scores on the GMAT. In some schools, incoming students are required to have relevant work experience.

Coursework

Program coursework is typically a combination of technical, business, and management courses. Significant projects may also have to be completed by program graduates. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Financial accounting principles
•Database management
•Management statistics
•Infrastructure of computing applications
•Retrieving and organizing information

Career Choices

Program graduates from these interdisciplinary degree programs can seek occupations in the technical side of the business, among numerous other areas. They can work for various companies, including service and consulting firms. They can also choose from possible career options such as:

•Technical staffer
•Product analyst
•Technical analyst
•Consultant
•Product development

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth rate of 15% has been predicted for computer and information systems managers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Over the same period, a job growth rate of 25% has been predicted for computer systems analysts. These analysts are reported to have banked an average annual wage of $79,680 during May 2012 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Program graduates seeking careers in research or academia may pursue doctoral degrees in information systems management. Students in these programs will gain a firm foundation of research applications and methodologies. The program will also include advanced coursework in subjects such as economics, operations management, and computer science. Students can focus on a particular area of information systems through elective coursework. Along with coursework, Ph.D. students may have to complete a doctoral thesis of original research and pass a preliminary examination.
