Few universities carry the cutting edge on advanced academic studies as is found in the curriculum of the University of Maryland (UMD) and leading the way is the College of Education (COE) division, which provides programs for a master’s degree, PhD degree, and even Doctor of Education (EdD) degree. These are students who will become future practitioners, researchers, and teachers. Some may even go on to shape the lives of children, or change company or government policies.

Curriculum and Location of UMD COE Training

Program studies focus on multiple aspects of teaching, counseling and people skills. The Doctorate of Philosophy and Doctorate of Education is also an option, particularly in academic subjects like leadership specialization. Related subjects might include comparative education, education history, politics, philosophy, law and equity and diversity.

The High Ranking of UMD

Not only did U.S. News and World Report rank The University of Maryland College Park as number seventeen among all U.S. public research institutions, but the College of Education alone claimed nine programs in the top 20 programs for 2011, within the same publication. UMD encourages its students to think outside the box, to use innovative approaches and creative skills to meet challenging situations. In addition, the Shanghai Jiao University ranked Maryland as the 38th school in the world among other global universities.

Expectations for UMD College of Education

Standards for the application process at UMD are high. Students finishing high school must have a grade average of A-/B+ or better, and have been enrolled in the most challenging course available at their school. Preference is given to those who graduated with honors, Advanced Placement or Baccalaureate courses. The middle fifty percent of students accepted had SAT scores ranging from 1260 to 1410, with 25% below 1260 and 25% above 1410. However, for undergraduate work, the College of Education provides a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree for 120 credit hours, with a GPA of 2.75 as the minimum. Internships also require a passing grade.

UMCP is an exciting step for students who have a vision of expanding horizons and a progressive future. The college has taken giant leaps in health studies and policies toward women in science. It is considered number five for the best values in public higher education for in-state residents and number ten for out-of-state residents.
