University of Maryland College Park Bachelor Degree Program in Mathematics Education

University & College Info June 11, 2013

It’s not money that makes the world go round—it is math. The value of an item, a service or commodity is all about numbers, and much of what we know about trade is all theorized in basic mathematics. When you go to school to learn mathematics education, you will learn more than dead information—you will learn how the world works, how businesses operate and how our future is largely decided by mathematical equations. This is a world-interest subject and one that can help you find a top paying career. The University of Maryland at College Park offers a bachelor degree program in mathematics education for students who have an interest in this field.

UMCP Curriculum Topics

This subject is presented by the Department of Mathematics, which educates students in theory and practices, so they are able to solve problems, apply math principles in everyday life, and also use this major field of interest to improve society as a whole. Many students go on to work in a governmental job, a large corporation or at an educational institution. This program focuses more on education and less on industrial or scientific math. You will focus your efforts on teaching young and impressionable minds about one of the most important subjects, along with reading and writing.

Not only will students be taught math science, but they will also learn how to value diversity, how to collaborate with others, and how to develop curiosity in their own future students. The College of Education at UMD will develop your scholarly, artistic and leadership abilities. Studies include three areas of interest; the elementary school level, for teaching math subjects for grades 1-5, the middle school for grades 6-8, and secondary or high school with grade level 9-12.

The elementary training path not only covers math, but related classes in liberal arts, as well as an Area of Emphasis. Core subjects are taught throughout this four year plan. The middle school UMD program on mathematics education teaches math and related sciences, while the secondary course involves an internship requirement, with the possibility of a double degree.

Added Bonuses for UMD Students

One neat thing about going to school at the University of Maryland at College Park is that the college has many centers, associations and institutes that help students with development. For example, there is the Center for Children, Relationships, and Culture, the Center for Educational Excellence in Alternative Settings and the Center for Literacy, Language, and Culture.

There are research and development projects that prepare and nurture students towards greater opportunities. You will be taught how to inspire students as a teacher, how social and political forces shape teaching and the environment, as well as how all these efforts and ideas complement one another for the benefit of each successive generation.

If you have ever wanted to make a difference in a young person’s life and become one of those great, “To Sir with Love” teachers that we always idealize, then it’s about time to get involved in the academic scene. Explore your potential as an educator by teaching a subject that matters and a career path that earns respect.
