University of Maryland College Park Bachelor Degree Program in Philosophy

University & College Info June 24, 2013

You know the real difference between man and chimp? It is philosophy, the ability to be self-aware, to intellectualize, to pontificate, and most of all, to learn something important about life. This is what philosophy is, and everyone knows about philosophy. However, few are actually well versed in the subject. Therefore, the real difference between mankind and monkeys is that man understands philosophy through a willingness to study and learn. Show yourself as an educated person, and perhaps find an exciting career in the process of learning. The University of Maryland at College Park offers a bachelor degree program in philosophy and it runs the gamut of some heavy philosophical issues and debates.

What Does the Program Teach?

The philosophy degree program requires 36 hours and twelve subjects, not including internship programs. An average of C- or better is required, as well as a 2.0 GPA. The philosophy program investigates all of the great minds of science, philosophy, religion and politics. Some of the top names covered will be Charles Darwin, Plato, and Immanuel Kant. However, the names are secondary when compared to the life lessons that the curriculum will explore.

After an introduction, contemporary moral issues will be discussed, followed by logic, and then onto physical and metaphysics and the role they must play in modern philosophy. At the same time, the curriculum also discusses ancient philosophy in a pre-scientific existence, as well as philosophy of art, religion, and even biology. Subsections will include Africana philosophy, voting theory, fair division, and even the philosophy behind beauty. Ethics are an important consideration behind philosophy, and so the philosophy of ethics will be discussed, not to mention aspects of law, language and symbolic logic. Lastly, the philosophy only matters when it improves the present. Therefore, the effect of philosophy on justice, art, social civics, and the like, will be covered.

Why Choose UMD and the Philosophy Degree?

Students will learn not only philosophy as a historical journey, but also the modern philosophy of science, cognitive study, and value theory. Students will learn about science, and how scientific conclusions are reached, the role of observation and experimentation, what constitutes conceptual problems, among other topics. The goal is to develop a student’s mind for reasoning and to exercise their expository skills. What students will quickly discover is that philosophy is not an art or a history lesson, but an activity, and one that requires inventive synthesis and effective communication. Students who graduate will go onto find jobs in government, business management, law, medicine and other prestigious fields that value intellectual approaches, and most importantly, knowledge of science in action. Students will be well educated; they will be able to present critically, yet sympathetically, philosophical views that differ from their own. Finally, they will be able to take advantage of scholarship programs like the W.E. Schlaretzki Prize and the Joseph and Beth Duckett Scholarship. If you want to make a career out of your intelligence, savvy and debating ability, then build upon your potential with a solid education in this field, with the University of Maryland at College Park’s help.
