The Curriculum for UMD’s Plant Sciences Program
Students will learn how to prepare for a research career, in addition to some other basics of plant life and modern technology. This program is handled by the Department of Plant Science and Landscape. Depending on your focus, you may choose a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Studies and Technology, or a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture. Upon completion of this program, you will be able to develop technical and knowledge based skills, as well as learn how to collaborate with others to solve problems and formulate to real world solutions. You will also learn the importance of communicating effectively and how to build relationships with various groups for the best results.
Students will study chemistry essentials as well as writing, technical writing and algebra for starters. They will also learn calculus, horticulture and crop production sciences. As the program progresses, they will learn biology of insects, management practices of farms, organic and biochemical processes, soil fertility, and even genes and plant propagation. No in-depth education would be complete without a discussion of the environment.
