Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree in Business Management

An associate degree program in business management is designed for students who want to develop communication and leadership skills to compete in a business environment. Upon completion of this program students will earn an Associate of Applied Science degree. In a business management degree program, students will explore office procedures, human resources, accounting, and other subjects that will give them a concrete knowledge of how to manage a business.

A.A.S. Degree in Business Management

Students enrolled in an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Business Management program learn about providing organizational and analytical services such as the development of business plans, analysis of marketing needs, planning and implementation for improvements. Business and technical concepts such as employee management and computer applications are investigated by students who will be provided with skills needed to effectively handle business tasks and manage employees.

Education Requirements

Applicants are typically required by schools to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma. In the absence of a high school diploma, prospective students may be allowed to enroll, if they satisfy some other criteria. In addition, applicants who want to enroll in business programs are required to pass entrance examinations that test communications, reading, and math.

Program Coursework

Associate degree program in business management courses generally concentrates on solving real-world business problems and managing office interactions. Emphasis is placed on coursework involving ethics, teamwork, and communications. Business management program course topics may include the following:

•Business ethics
•Accounting
•Human resource management
•Marketing
•Speech fundamentals
•Technical communication

Career Options

Graduates will have the decision-making skills and management knowledge to qualify for entry-level management positions in a business environment. Management positions are available in all industries, such as telecommunications, government, trade, banking, and manufacturing. Possible career options may include the following:

•Sales manager
•Office manager

Information on Continuing Education

Those who seek a higher management position after graduating from the associate’s degree program should consider continuing their education by enrolling in a bachelor degree program in business management or a master degree program in business administration. Top executives typically hold a bachelor degree at the very minimum (source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS – www.bls.gov)). Students may be allowed to transfer some of the credits earned in an associate degree program to a bachelor or master degree program.
