Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Human Resource Leadership

Students will be taught the skills necessary to effectively develop, utilize, and hire a company’s workforce when they participate in a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program in Human Resource Leadership. Entry-level managerial career opportunities in Human Resource Management will be available to graduates in public, nonprofit, and private sectors.

B.S. Programs in Human Resource Leadership

Schools offer Bachelor of Science degree programs in Human Resource Leadership as four-year courses, or as 2-year completion programs for the specific benefit of students with junior standings. In the majority of 4-year programs, coursework has a liberal arts orientation with emphasis on Human Resources Management and Leadership.

Students enrolled in the program can expect to become adept at understanding employment law, training employees, establishing policies and retaining employees. The program involves examination by students of concepts in conflict management, collective bargaining and corporate training. Programs also focus on organizational development and compensation practice.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

Coursework includes general business classes in subject areas, such as accounting, economics, business law, and computer applications, as well as general management programs, such as ethics, communications, and intercultural management. There are also different core Human Resource Leadership topics, including:

•Organizational behavior
•Employment law
•Labor relations

Career Choices

Graduates are trained in the analysis of compensation benefits, resolution of conflicts, planning of orientations and organization of training within different companies. They may seek entry-level managerial positions, such as:

•Employee benefits manager
•Human resource manager
•Recruiter

Job and Wage Outlook

In May 2012, the average annual wage the middle half of human resources managers ranged from $76,350 to $132,620 (U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)). That year, the average annual salary for the middle 50% of compensation and benefits managers was $71,000 to $130,200, while it ranged from $41,440 to $74,070 for the middle 50% of training and development managers, and from $41,820 to $74,130 for the middle 50% of human resources specialists.

Over the 2012-2022 decade, human resources managers are expected to enjoy a job growth of 13%; during the same period, job growth of 3% is predicted for benefits and compensation managers, 11% for training and development managers, and 7% for human resources specialists, respectively (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of Bachelor of Science degree programs in Human Resource Leadership can pursue continued education by earning a master’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, or Labor Relations, to boost their career opportunities. Higher-level management advancement would necessitate knowledge of business, technology or industrial relations.

The Society for Human Resource Management offers numerous voluntary professional certification programs including two levels of certification. Specific experience and coursework requirements are entailed in most certification programs, in addition to the passage of an exam to earn the certified credential.
