You cannot possibly understand a world away from the comfort of your own sofa. You may think you know something about Iran from the news media, but in truth, there is an entire language and culture that bears investigating. The UMD’s program in Persian studies does not just cover language; it also covers history, literature, ancient and modern culture, as well as linguistics.

What Do Students Learn in UMD’s Persian Studies Program?

Students enrolled at UMD’s Persian studies program will learn all vital aspects of Persian life, from culture to history to language; this will enable them to foster communication, strengthen community and encourage intercultural communications with others. Persia covers not only Iran, but also parts of Central Asia and Afghanistan. The Persian Diaspora is discussed, as are the basics of writing, reading and listening to the conversation in the language.

Furthermore, culture is presented according to perspectives, practices, and even products from Iranian culture. In addition to majoring in Persian studies, you can also minor in a business subject such as education, government, journalism or art. At least nine credits must go to an elective subject that will be taught entirely in the Persian language. Studies began with elementary Persian teachings, then progress to intermediate studies, like Persian classical literature, Arabic, and translation. In addition, students will learn about Iranian cinema, literature and the role of Islam in Iranian daily living.

The Roshan Institute for Persian Studies is the channel UMD works through. A total of 45 credits will be completed for graduation, including 18 for core studies, six for upper level electives given in Persian, 12 for English Persian studies, and nine for a related subject. By the end of the program, students will be adept at Iranian living, as well as skilled in conversation, reading and writing. Students will be expected to maintain a C or 2.0 grade point average (GPA).

Another award is the Amirsaleh Student Award, which is open to all students, and offered original essays in English. The instructor makes the letter of nomination.

Another provision is the language house, or specifically, the Language House Immersion Program. In St. Mary’s Hall, is a learning program that brings students together for daily interaction. Communication skills are honed as the group meets for social activities, attend events, and do additional schoolwork in Persian. This scope of the House is well beyond Persian.
