University of Maryland College Park Bachelor Degree Program in Letters and Sciences

University & College Info June 9, 2013

What do you want to do when you grow up? That elementary question eventually becomes, “What career focus are you pursuing now that you’re out of college?” This is a hugely important issue and it never truly leaves your mind—not until you find that dream career, anyway. The truth is planning is everything in college and before college for that matter. The University of Maryland at College Park offers a bachelor degree program in letters and sciences, which is a program that helps students prepare for degree-granting majors. This is an academic advisement program to help students who are still deciding on their major.

What Does the Letters and Sciences Program at UMD Teach?

The education involved in this study includes curriculum centered on university general education, foreign language, math, breadth and depth, and other general, but important social subjects like humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. In total, there are 120 degree credits in this program and quality of work requirements. In addition to training, faculty also focuses on giving students advice regarding academic goals, support programs, and professional opportunities that could fit in with their future plans. The program is a four semester plan that is meant to progress naturally into a degree granting major.

This is a liberal arts degree, although perceiving what each subject entails can sometimes be confusing. For example, the Breadth training module involves teaching students not only knowledge, but the purpose in which such knowledge is used and required. Learning about humanities, as well as biology and social studies provides students with a well-rounded education as a specialist.

One of the best aspects about this graduate program is that it encourages co-curricular experiences. Students can use electronic resources, and can also look forward to field trips. Students taking this program must attend a change of major workshop, which will allow them access to advising.

UMD LTSC Opportunities to Consider

The University of Maryland at College Park’s bachelor degree program in letters and sciences offers scholarships for students that qualify through the LTSC Scholarship Award and the Betty Beckley Award. The former of these requires sophomore status and over 30 credits by the end of the spring semester, along with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0, as well as involvement in a university organization. The latter, the Betty Beckley Award, helps students realize their dreams as well as their goals, and is based on the work of Betty J. Beckley, a former Director and Dean. This award also focuses on sophomores who take the initiative to be involved in organizations related to schooling. The qualifications for this scholarship are based on academic achievements as well as financial need, in addition to the efforts of each student, when it comes to extracurricular school activities.

This is an important study that could help improve the future of a promising student who has the world ahead of him or her. Why not contact the UMD campus and find out all of your options? This may be the path laid out for you, the one that finally brings you in line with your lifelong dreams.
